Introducing the jones’ food & wine column
October 31, 2008

jones the grocer (NZ), has spent the past few years sourcing some of New Zealands’ best natural locally produced gourmet products.
We love using jones products to create tasty treats for friends and family, and are pleased to announce starting this week, Easy Green Living will feature a weekly jones’ food & wine column. Here you’ll find information on natural gourmet products, with helpful tips and tasty recipes.
This week:
Matatoki Organic Golden Gouda (NZ / Cows milk)

Wonderfully fresh and creamy with light milk tones & grasses. A great sandwich cheese but will also melt & grate well.
Price: $4.50 / 100g
Christine, jones “fromagerie” guru, told me this organic golden gouda melts beautifully and suggested trying one of her favourite recipes:
Place new baby potatoes in oven dish together with sage leaves, garlic and lemon rind. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Toss grated Matatoki Organic Golden Gouda on top of potatoes. Roast until cooked.
Sounds divine. Guess what I’m cooking this weekend!
Stylish Rustic Wooden Cheese Boards
At jones this week, I spotted a beautiful range of stylish rustic wooden accessories. Perfect for alfresco entertaining this summer.
The cheese board shown in the photo above, is made from the timber of a rare & ancient Puketea log salvaged from the remains of a Central North Island forest destroyed in the 1800 – 1650 BC eruptions at Hatepe, north-east of Lake Taupo.
The range includes wooden eating utensils. Christine commented eating from the wooden utensil can be beneficial for people going though chemotherapy, as the properties in the wood assist with the acid taste.
Prices:
- Small cheese accessories < 20cm $45.50
- Medium cheese accessories 20-25 $59.50
- Large cheese accessories 25cm + $79.50

I would like to enter the draw to win the Kagi bad filled with goodies please!
I am a subscriber to the healthy food magazine. Quinoa is my flavour of the month- and with this recipe from the editor (Niki Bezzant ). I’m sure many others will start to enjoy quinoa too! Its a gluten free seed (not grain) thats high in protein and tastes yummy!
Zesty couscous or quinoa salad with roasted pumpkin and cashews
Instructions
Step 1 Preheat oven to 200°C. Cover couscous with an equal quantity of boiling water or stock in a bowl. Cover and leave for 5 minutes, before fluffing with a fork.
Step 2 Meanwhile, roast pumpkin and onion slices for about 30 minutes, until soft and tender.
Step 3 Combine juices, vinegar and oil to make the dressing. Combine all other ingredients in a large bowl, add the dressing and toss well to combine. Eat warm or chilled.
Variation
Replace couscous with quinoa: takes about 40 minutes to cook. Add to boiling water or stock in a pot (for every cup of quinoa, use 1 2/3 cups water). Cover and simmer on a low heat for 18-20 minutes. Turn off heat and let stand for 15 minutes, before fluffing with a fork.
