Vick’s Veggie Garden Journal - 16 Nov 08

November 16, 2008

My dear friend, Vick, has decided to follow in the footsteps of Lynda Hallinan (Editor, NZ Gardener) and give sustainable gardening a go!

Having spent the past three years building her dream home in Whangarei, with husband Chris, and after the happy arrival of beautiful daughter Maddie this year, Vick has set about putting in place her dream of a sustainable garden. Vick’s goal is to create a garden that produces her own “groceries” to create healthy nutritious meals for family and friends in her gorgeous new kitchen!

Vick has kindly agreed to share with Easy Green Living, her gardening experiences. Vick is also a sensational cook so we’ll be checking in for cooking tips and recipes. Vick has a number of exciting sustainable gardening projects underway, which we look forward to sharing with you over the following seasons.

Vick is starting at grass roots, although she has some knowledge and a great resource to tap into. Her parents are avid gardeners. Check out the photo below of a recent harvest from their veggie garden, kindly given to us! Fresh home grown vegetables taste so good!

Vegie Crop

This week, Vick sent us some photos of her veggie garden. Her first crop will be ready in December…

1. Xmas Potatoes - fast growing potatoes called Swist potatoes.  Vick told us they take 80 days to grow.  She planted this crop 60 days ago (shown in photo below). This crop will be ready for Xmas Day.

“Vick’s Veggie Garden Journal” is bound to give you practical tips and ideas, and show it is possible to grow your own groceries and still produce stylish tasty meals. I’m inspired and planted herbs and lettuces this weekend for my summer salads.
